LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - Lawton Public Schools (OK) has introduced the Stopfinder app, giving parents real-time access to their child’s bus location and boarding information.
Kayla Hunt, transportation coordinator for LPS, said the district previously used a different app but wanted to offer a more user-friendly option.
“We had an app previously and wanted to provide something that was a little bit better — more user friendly for the parents,” Hunt said. “That way they would have that extra safety measure of knowing when and where their students were getting on and off the bus.”
Parents can access the app by providing their email address to their child’s school. LPS parent Amanda Smith said the setup process is straightforward.
“Once you receive the email from Stopfinder, it is super easy,” Smith said. “It gives you a prompt that gives you exactly what you are supposed to do. You click on that link, and it asks you to create a password and then when you download the app your login is the email it got sent to plus the password you just created, and all your information should be right there.”
Smith said she has four children at different schools and all of their information appeared in the app after a single setup.
When a student boards or exits a bus, they scan their student ID badge. Hunt said that scan registers on tablets installed on each bus, allowing drivers to see which students are on board. That data is then reported back to the district.
The app also serves as a safety measure if a student boards the wrong bus, according to LPS.
Parents can extend app access to trusted caregivers, including grandparents or babysitters. Smith said the primary account holder controls who receives access and for how long.
“You can personalize it to who is able to access your kids,” Smith said. “You can also set date ranges. So, if grandma was only going to be in town for a week you can set it for that week, so she is not getting notified all the time.”
LPS said its goal is to provide the safest bus ride possible, from the moment a child steps onto the bus until they reach their final destination.
“It feels really good knowing that I know exactly what’s going on in real time,” Smith said. “That’s really comforting being a parent knowing that you have access to those things and not having to call and ask for those.”
The Stopfinder app is available for download through your phone’s app store. Parents with additional questions can contact Lawton Public Schools transportation by phone or email.
