WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Wyoming Public Schools (MI) rolled out new technology Tuesday as students returned to class, giving parents real-time updates on school buses.

Using grant funds, the district equipped its 25 buses with Transfinder, a routing software that improves scheduling and safety, said Joe Steffes, director of safety, security and transportation. More than 80% of students use one of the district’s 17 bus routes.

Students now scan a badge when boarding, allowing parents to track buses through the Stopfinder app. Each bus is also equipped with GPS, sending alerts if a vehicle runs late.

“Our buses have GPS on them,” Steffes said. “If it’s running late, maybe due to traffic, we’re able to send a push notification out to those parents and let them know, ‘Hey, Bus 10 is running five minutes late.’”

The buses also carry cameras that record drivers who fail to stop when buses load or unload students.
